Tactical Electronics has agreed to donate $1 for every new like they receive on their Facebook page, up to 1,500 likes. The $1,500 donation will be made to the Seabee Historical Foundation to help the Seabee Museum preserve the history and accomplishments of the Navy Seabees.
The CEC/Seabee Historical Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization located in Gulfport, MS (the homeport for the east coast Seabees) and is the private support arm of the US Navy Seabee Museum at the Seabee base at Port Hueneme, CA. The Seabee Museum was started shortly after the end of WWII to help preserve the story of the Navy’s Seabees, who were created at the start of the war to operate at the forward edge of battle, building the runways, ports, hospitals , supply facilities and countless other requirements needed to create the bases for the Army, Navy and Marine Corps to function. Over 325,000 Seabees served during the war, and afterwards the Navy opted to keep the Seabees, although in fewer numbers. The Seabee continued their support efforts through Korea, Vietnam and are now finishing their work in the Mideast.
The Congress allows the services to own and operate military museums, but any new construction, replacement, expansion or upgrade must be funded privately. In the 90s, after being housed in two WWII Quonset huts for nearly fifty years, the Seabee Museum, with neither heating, air conditioning, nor humidity control and housed in a WWII temporary building, was in dire need of help. In 2008, after an extensive campaign, the Foundation provided the Navy a $12,000,000 gift for the construction of a new building to house the Seabee Museum. The stunning new building opened to the public (with no charge for admission) in July 2011 with temporary exhibits and displays used to tell the Seabee story. More information on the museum can be found at usnavyseabeemuseum.com .
The Foundation is now focused on a $9.5 million campaign for the construction and installation of the permanent interactive exhibits and displays which will tell the Seabee story and transform the 38,000 sf new building into a world class museum.
“This support from Tactical Electronics will take us a step closer to making the new exhibits and displays a reality. Seabees everywhere join me in saying “Thank You!!”,” William Hilderbrand, President of CEC/Seabee Historical Foundation, said.
